More than three-quarters of British teachers would like access to video conferencing technology so they can have digital meetings with pupils, their parents and colleagues when face-to-face meetings are not possible. According to video conferencing specialist Polycom, the driving force behind demand for the technology is its ability to increase engagement.

The firm surveyed 500 schools in the UK, France, Germany, Russia and the Nordics and found that two-thirds of those questioned felt that video conferencing technology would help to improve core skills. Many also thought that use of the technology would provide pupils with transferable skills that could be used later in life.

Gary Rider, Europe, Middle East and Africa president for Polycom, said: "The popularity of videoconferencing as a method of communication in education is not surprising with an overwhelming majority (85 per cent) of educators who expect the use of these technologies to increase over the next five years."

Polycom has been steadily adding functionality to its video conferencing solutions and just last month incorporated whiteboard capabilities into its offering.
