A new study has highlighted how companies should regard remote working as an important business continuity issue.

According to the research by consultancy firm Ramsac, all of the companies polled allowed staff to work from home during the recent severe weather conditions seen across the UK.

It also revealed that companies with such plans in place offer remote access to email services, while nearly seven out of ten offer access to customer databases and other key applications.

Robert May, managing director of Ramsac, suggested the results were encouraging but warned there was room for improvement.

"None of the businesses offered remote access to the office telephone system. In an emergency the telephone is still the main channel of communication for customers, suppliers and employees, so it needs to be up and running," he added.

Workplace solutions provider Voxclever recently suggested that remote working strategies can increase the flexibility of firms.
