Identity management has become the key to the creation of next generation internet services, it has been claimed.

According to a white paper published by 3G Americas entitled Identity Management: Overview of Standards and Technologies for Mobile and Fixed Internet, operators of next generation network services must now seamlessly integrate mobile, wireline, and internet businesses and technologies, while providing customer-centric and identity-oriented services.

Chris Pearson, president of the group, commented that the internet is now in its third phase of development – which pertains to the mobile internet.

He added: "With this tremendous mobile internet opportunity is the huge responsibility for mobile operators to provide security, privacy and a positive experience for their customers."

Earlier this month, Edd Dawson, managing director of technology advice portal broadband.co.uk, claimed the take-up of next generation networks in the UK will require significant investment so that homes across the country are able to make use of the facility.
