Mobile working is a top priority for business, claims IDC

The integration of mobile devices - including smartphones and tablets - has become a top priority for businesses, according to IT analyst IDC. The organisation claims that so-called 'bring your own device' initiatives are becoming commonplace across the world of business - not just in IT departments.

Rohit Mehra, director of enterprise communications infrastructure at IDC, said that demand for wireless local area network (WLAN) solutions was rising as businesses adopt a more inclusive attitude toward technology. "The tremendous momentum behind smartphones and tablets and their continued uptake in the enterprise in conjunction with mobile and cloud-based apps are motivating IT firms to reassess their network infrastructure needs, and that bodes well for network equipment vendors," Mehra claimed.

In Europe the WLAN market expanded by 21.8 per cent in the past year, according to IDC research - which is faster than the rate of growth seen in the US. There has also been a marked shift in the type of mobile devices businesspeople are using. Apple's iPhone recently overtook BlackBerry as the company smartphone of choice.
