With the proliferation of web 2.0 applications and services gathering pace, high bandwidth connectivity has become a key issue for many firms.
Social networking, online video and hosted office applications are all making a dent in firms' dedicated bandwidth - and the problem shows no sign of abating.
Writing for Computerworld, Desmond Toh, marketing director at network infrastructure provider DLink, said that businesses need to adapt their workplace internet usage policies if they are to make the most of next generation network technology and digital leased lines.
"Communication tools like video conferencing and email generates a steady stream of traffic, which no doubt consumes a significant amount of bandwidth," he noted.
Mr Toh added that firms must try to circumnavigate the problem by creating distinct bandwidth allocations for mission-critical applications that are too important to do without.
Recently, Dave Elliot, senior product marketing manager for Symantec, said that dedicated access technologies can boost a firm's bandwidth dramatically.
