Remote working practices could be set to become more widespread as the prime minister has pledged to ensure each home in the UK benefits from high-speed internet access.

Gordon Brown explained that making super-fast broadband available to all households is among the targets for 2020.

"I want Britain to be the world leader in the digital economy, which will create over a quarter of a million skilled jobs," he said.

This week's Budget is set to include other steps to advance technology, while Mr Brown revealed that £30 million will be allocated to the creation of an Institute of Web Science - designed to ensure the UK is at the "cutting edge" of internet research.

Writing for HR Magazine last week, chief executive of Regus Group Mark Dixon noted that remote working brings benefits to businesses as well as employees - who can spend more time with family as a result of reduced travel times.
