Ethernet extensions are the most popular technology for building converged telecommunications, it has been claimed.

According to the Carrier Ethernet Switch/Router Quarterly Market Tracker report published by Heavy Reading, the facility offers price advantages but has still been affected by the economic downturn.

Stan Hubbard, senior analyst for the group, commented: "Carrier ethernet remains the technology of choice for building converged telecommunications network solutions because of its extraordinary performance-price advantages."

He added, however, that the sector has been affected by the worsening global recession, intensifying vendor competition and unstable credit markets, all of which are forcing network operators to delay upgrades and expansions.

Earlier this week, a joint study by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association and IBM found that cloud computing is the technology most likely to force significant business change on Wall Street.

The report found that 46 per cent of Wall Street firms now predict availability of the facility is likely to change the way their IT departments operate.
