Irish telecommunications firm Eircom has increased the speeds that are available through its next generation network services.

According to Siliconrepublic.com, the next generation Ethernet technology leveraged by the organisation allows operators to offer a range of solutions to businesses and consumers, including video conferencing and high-quality VoIP.

In addition, connection speeds of up to 1Gbps are also available through the infrastructure, which is now on offer in over 500 exchanges across Ireland.

Talking to the website, John McKeon, managing director of Eircom Wholesale, said: "Next generation network Ethernet delivers the data product our wholesale customers have been asking for, not just in terms of speed and capacity, but also in terms of reach and cost."

Details of the network improvements have come after figures from the International Data Corporation suggested that demand for Ethernet services is rising across the globe.

Both the Ethernet switching and routing markets enjoyed growth in the second quarter of this year.
